Dabbawalas :

• Dabbawala is a Hindi word, it means 'one who carries a box'. And Dabba means a box (you just assume as a lunchbox).
• Dabbawala carry and deliver freshly made food from customer's home in a Dabba and deliver it to the customer's workplace.
• It sounds simple, but it isn't. It is actually a highly specialized trade.

What....! Now, let me explain.You'll also know some amazing facts about 'Dabbawalas' that'll stun you.

• Founder : Mahadeo Havaji, in 1890.

• Dabbawala is the person, who is the part of a delivery system that collects hot food in lunch boxes from residences of workers in the late morning, delivers it to the workplace, using bicycle, or on foot, or in trains and say no to motorbikes to avoid pollution.

• Dabbwalas are about 5,000 in a number and they deliver about 200,000 lunchboxes everyday..!
• Those 5,000 cover about 60 sq. km in Mumbai..!
• It all started from a need of a single man..!
• Most of the Dabbawala are from rural Maharashtra and they are semi literate..!
• 1 Dabbawala changes hands at least 6 times in transit before it reaches the customer. The same in its return journey also..! 
• Being poorly literate, yet they have perfected the art of timely and accurate delivery with a unique code system of alphabets and numbers..!

              

• They are recognized as delivering Dabba delivery at the accuracy of 6 sigma level means, 1 mistake in 6 millions chances..! and they are confident about it..!
• Every Dabbawala receives the same income irrespective to age, experience with same number of Dabba delivery, and it is around 12,000 INR/month..!
• Their annual turnover is about 50 crores..! 
• Dabbawala is not an employee, but he is an entrepreneur, having equal share holding in Dabbawala' trust..!
• Their service is uninterrupted even in days of extreme weather..!
• In their 125 years of operation, only one mistake took place, when Dabbawala was unable to deliver due to very heavy rain, and those first time strike was in 2011 in their 125 years of operation..!
